Public Shooting Ranges in VirginiaAmelia Directions: Three shooting ranges are available, including a rifle sighting-in range, a clay-bird shotgun range, and an elevated station for archery practice. Facilities are not available for handguns. The Amelia WMA ranges are normally open to the public on every day of the week except Wednesday. The ranges are closed every Wednesday for maintenance. The Amelia range is a six station, bench rest-only facility, with 25, 50 and 100-yd. target points. You may sight in any caliber rifle on the range, including black powder rifles, along with shotguns with slugs. No pistols are allowed. No reservations are required and there are no fees. Shooters are limited to one hour of shooting when the range is full. A shotgun range for hand-thrown clays and an archery range, are also available free of charge. Except for Wednesdays, the range is normally open to public use as follows:
Chickahominy Direction: The management area gains its name from the Chickahominy River which forms the area's eastern boundary. To the south, Morris Creek flows through the area and then along its southern boundary. Other smaller tidal creeks and marshy guts cut into the forests to provide additional wetland diversity. The upland, though mainly wooded with mixed hardwood and pine stands, also features cultivated, mowed and "old field" openings. The area's 5,217 acres are contiguous although there are some interior, private properties. Nearly level, elevations range from about 25 to 50 feet. RANGE CLOSURE NOTICE:The Chickahominy WMA range will temporarily close on September 25, 26, and 27. The purpose of the closure is to remove lead from target back stops. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Be sure to bring your own paper targets, cardboard backing, clothespins and tape. No reservations are required and there are no fees. No pistol shooting is permitted. Shooters are limited to one hour of shooting when the range is full.
C.F. Phelps Directions: The range is located on the C. F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area in Fauquier County near Sumerduck. To get to the range take Route 651 south from Route 29 at Remington or north from Route 17 near Goldvien to Rogers Ford Road , Route 632. Following the range signs, go approximately 1 mile on Rt 632 and take a right onto the gravel hunter access road. Follow the access road and bear right at the end into the range parking area. Range Operation Dates: September 1 to March 31, closed on Mondays.
Gathright Directions: The sighting-in range is located on the Gathright WMA in Clay Lick Hollow and may be accessed from State Route 600 south of Route 39. Range Operation Dates: September 1 to March 31, closed on Mondays.
White Oak Mountain Directions: The sighting-in range facility is located centrally at White Oak Mountain Wildlife Management Area and may be accessed from State Route 706 by following the direction signs posted on the area. Range Operation Dates for C.F. Phelps, Gathright, and White Oak Mountain are as follows: September 1 to March 31, closed on mondays
