April Fishing ReportsUpdated Fishing News: Bass Federation | Bass Insider | Bassmasters | FLW Outdoors Current | July 2005 |June 2005 |May 2005 | April 2005 | March 2005 Fishing Report for Lake Gaston, Virginia: April 23rdHad a BASS Federation Region 6 tournament today. Very windy day. I had a good tournament however. Fished Lizard creek first thing and picked up 4 keepers before 8:30am. Went to Pea Hill and caught two under fish between 9:30 and 12:00pm. Made the run back to Lizard Creek and capped off my limit with a 2.5lbs female. I didn't have a whole lot of weight but it was enough for a 30th place finish. The man fishing with me zeroed, so it could have been worse!! All fish came off of a 3/8 ounce spinnerbait with gold Colorado blades. Hope to continue the streak at Buggs Island in two weeks. Matt and I will be headed there this weekend to practice....Update Monday...Tight lines. Brandon Slaughter Fishing Report for Lake Gaston, Virginia: April 22ndWoke up to light rain and temps in the 50's. By the time we got to Pea Hill Creek, the skies were overcast with a little wind. Caught several fish on a 3/8 ounce spinnnerbait early on a stump flat in the back of Pea Hill. By mid-day, the sun had arrived and enabled me to sight fish a little. Caught one bedding fish on a Yum-Dinger. As the clouds gave way to a blue bird sky, I saw some huge females cruzing, looking for spawning beds. If I had to guess there was easily 20lbs. of fish between two docks. I decided to leave them alone until tomorrow. I did however flip docks in Pea Hill and Lizard Creek with a few more buck bass. Saw a fair number of fish in Lizard Creek. Hopefully will be able to produce results for Saturday's Federation Tournament. Will update on Monday....Tight lines.... Brandon Slaughter Fishing Report for Private Pond Dinwiddie: April 17 thBrandon and I went out to a private pond this afternoon to see if we could catch a few bass. Water was very clear and temperature up in the 60s. We fished from 4:30 till 6:30. Both of us caught fish on the first cast and managed to catch 6 or so. The bass were up close to the bank getting ready to spawn. Biggest fish was around 3 pounds or so. Both of us were fishing a YUM dinger thrown into open pockets in between clumps of grass. Brandon will be concentrating on Gaston this weekend coming up for a federation tournament… Matt Oliver Fishing Report for Lake Chesdin: April 15-16thThe 15th was a practice day and no bass were caught. The wind was terrible limiting us to fish the back of coves and little pockets the wind didn't effect. The 16th myself and Kenny Hueband fished the Marshall Bassmaster adult youth tournament. We launched at Whippernock and never left the creek. We fished the back of Whippernock staying out of the wind. Kenny was throwing a buzzbait when a small fish blew up on it. About 8:00 o'clock another fish just missed his buzzbait. I quickly threw my quarter ounce Hawg Caller spinnerbait to the area and landed a 3.02 lb bass. This was the only fish for me of the day. We fished all the way back into the creek but the farther back the colder the water. With time running out we headed toward the ramp. Fished the few docks and Kenny caught a smaller bass on a texas rigged wringworm. These two fished were big enough for second place and a $150 payout. I missed big fish by a mere .02 ounces. Others caught fish throwing yum dingers and flukes on the edges of the grass. If the wind dies down and the water changes from coffee with to0 much cream to a bit clearer the fishing sha'll pick up. John Oliver Fishing Report for Lake Gaston: April 16thTwo words....Very windy. Put in at Poplar Creek and went up lake. Tried to fish main lake points, but the wind would not allow it. Was forced to fish creeks and shallow pockets and docks. Caught a dozen buck bass or so, but no females. The biggest fish may have gone a pound. Will be making the trip back down there Friday and Saturday of this week for a federation tournament. Update next week....Tight lines..... Brandon Slaughter Fishing Report for Briery Creek Lake: April 10thWell Brandon, Shelly, Heather, and I wanted to see what the fuss was all about today so we headed to Briery Creek. This lake is something that you have to see to believe. We stopped off at Worsham's Grocery to get some minnow and launched from the 701 access ramp. Temperature was nice as well as the wind which from what I heard was miserable on Saturday. We fished from 8:00 to 1:00 then from 2:00 to 5:00. We were fishing with live minnows, soft plastics, and jigs. Caught a total of 7 fish in the all day with live minnows and soft plastics. Biggest fish of the day was 2.5 pounds. We thought we would manage some fish a little larger than this but we ended up with some nice sun and a good time on the water. There were many boats out on the water but we did not see anyone catching fish. I guess since the day was so nice the fish decided to take the day off. Until next time... Matt Oliver Fishing Report for private pond in Dinwiddie: April 5 thBrandon and I went out to fish a private pond this afternoon. Fished from 4:30 to 7:00, temperature was around 70 with the pond water temperature pretty high also. Brandon fished for freckle to try to get some dinner while I ended up walking around the entire pond to find the bass. Once I found the bass I could not keep them off my line. They were isolated in pockets in between grass clumps which had been blown around by the recent storms. I caught one bass on an in-line buzz bait, four bass on a Yum Dinger, and a pike on a Yum Dinger. I rigged the Yum Dinger with a 6 inch leader and a barrel swivel to aid in the weight. All bass were over 15 inches with the largest around 2.5 pounds. Matt Oliver Fishing Report for Lake Chesdin: April 2ndFishing was very tough today after the recent rain fall. The water was well beyond stained I would have to say it was chocolate. Temperature was up around the 50's until the rain came in and hit us hard. Brandon and I threw the kitchen sink at them from Yum Dingers to Spinner Baits to Jigs with no luck the entire day, fished from 6:30 until 1:00. The tournament was won by a fellow who claimed to have had one bite all day and that fish ended up weighing in at 7.93 pounds. I just wish Brandon or I would have had that one bite. Matt Oliver
