Tuna Fishing

Filed under: Fishing Reports — matt @ 8:29 am

It has been a while since I posted anything on the blog. I wanted to post the tuna fishing trip John, Brandon, and I went on with Jordan West. Jordan is the captain of the West Wind and he runs his own charter service called West Wind Charters out of Chincoteague Island. Mostly he provides Chincoteague boat charters that are for sight seeing or inshore fishing but we talked him into going offshore. We all went to college together and this was the first time we all could make it to the island at the same time.

The trip did not start out so good as we got 10 miles offshore headed for 30 miles Jordan remembers that we left the gaf in the back of my truck that morning.  Well as luck turns out 10 minutes after we arrived at our first fishing spot we hook into a large tuna.  John is up and fights this tuna for about 30 minutes until he gets it to the boat, Jordan then lets us know that he is going to grab this tuna by the tail and pull it into his boat (21 or 22 foot Sea Hunt).  Brandon and I just kinda look at each other like yeah right.  Well after another 15 minutes or so of fighting the tuna right at the boat Jordan reached down and somehow pulls this thing out of the water by its tail, we then through a t-shirt over the fish's eyes to try to keep it calm.  This was one of the craziest things I have ever seen while out on the water.  Here are some of the pics.  The first on is when Jordan was getting ready to reach in and grab the 150 to 160 pound tuna by the tail.

Lake Chesdin 5/16

Filed under: Fishing Reports — matt @ 4:14 pm

I went to the lake after work and fished till almost dark.  I managed two keepers both around 3.5 both off a yum dinger.  Fished the weed lines on the main river with a shallow crankbait to no success and caught one fish in cattle creek and the other in wippernock.

Lake Chesdin 4/28

Filed under: Fishing Reports — matt @ 1:42 pm

Late post, sorry. I fished Chesdin this past weekend. On Friday I received an email from Becky Gore (JR. B.A.S.S. Federation Nation – Advisor) asking if I would be willing to take a couple of Orange County high school guys out to pre-fish for their tournament on Sunday. I was more than happy to take them out and try to show them the lake. I do either really good or really poorly on Lake Chesdin. There was a tournament out of Wippernock and we launched around 7:30. We headed up the lake and fished a couple of coves, a guy I know was in one of them and he was fishing the tournament so we backed off a little to not mess him up. We caught a couple of catfish which hit like bass and I caught a nice bass right under 6 in one of the coves we were fishing. I talked to Becky yesterday and she told me Corey placed 2nd (he was one of the guys that was in my boat). Check out the OCHS anglers website.

Lake Chesdin 4/21/07

Filed under: Fishing Reports — matt @ 4:58 pm

I went out and fished Chesdin on Saturday. I wanted to give the river one more day to calm down and I thought that maybe Chesdin would be heated up with fish. When I got to the marina the Fishers of Men tournament was just getting under way, the fog was bad so they pushed the start back about 30 minutes or so. Click here for their results. I fished from 7:00 or so till 12:30. Early I broke off a big fish on a Strike King Pure Poison. I only got one more bit the rest of the morning. I heard that the fish started getting really active late afternoon which is what I figured. It was colder than I thought on Friday night so they probably needed the day to get heated up.

Roanoke River Fishing Report 4/4

Filed under: Fishing Reports — brandon @ 10:01 am

I had a good evening last Wednesday fishing the Roanoke River for largemouth.  Clyde and I fished from 5pm to 8pm and caught 14 bass, the largest one being the one Budda posted the pic of last week.  I did not have a scale with me, but I am guessing 8.5lbs. or more.  I have a 7.75lbs. mounted and the fish I caught the other night was way bigger than that one.  We caught several more that were close to 5lbs. and the rest of the fish were 2 to 3 lbs.  The Rock fish are not to Weldon yet, but when the bass fishing is as good as it is in this river, I can wait on the Rocks!!
