John and Tucker Turkey Hunt

Talked to John this morning and looks like his son Tucker is not just a good luck deer hunter but also provide John with some good luck for turkeys.  John and Tucker got a chance to go out over the Easter weekend and laid the smack down on a good size bird.  Congrats to Tucker for being a natural in the woods and congrats to John!  I can’t wait till I can take my son out and I hope that he is as good as Tucker is in the woods.

Turkeys Last Week

Been a busy few days back in the office.  Brandon and I went out last week and heard a lot of turkeys but kept getting the slip when trying to setup on them.  Had two gobblers in our lap Friday morning but when they flew down so did a hen which promptly escorted them down the ridge towards pasture land.

We did have a cool late morning hunt on Friday with a hen coming in to our decoys in a pasture and got some good video of her trying to figure out why the decoys were not following her when she walked past.  Played this game for about 45 minutes until she finally got frustrated and walked up into the mountains.

Open Day Turkey Season 2011

Had an awesome opening day for the 2011 turkey season.  Bill, Randal, Brandon, and I got to the hunt club in time on Friday to roost a few birds.  We all took off after them in the morning with Bill going solo and knockin one’s lights out.  He used decoys and some good callin to bring in his 20 pound plus bird with 9 1/2 inch beard and 7/8 inch spurs.  Brandon, Randal, and I went after birds together and I got some good video of Brandon calling with 4 to 5 different turkeys responding back and forth.  Randal took a bird that tried to slip up on us at the last minute.  With some quick manuvering Randal took the shot and knocked down a nice one very similar to the size of Bill’s.

Buggs Island 3-19-2011

My dad and I decided to try the lake last Saturday since the weather was nice and the water was up (304 level) in the bushes. Our initial plan was to fish the bushes because we thought the water temps and the full moon would have the fish migrating towards the banks and bushes. We concentrated on fishing spinnerbaits and flipping soft plastic as well as pig/jig with no takers. We finally decided that the fish we were after had not pulled up, so we started to fish crank baits and finally started to figure them out. Before the day was over, we caught 5 fish, with the largest being about 2.5lbs. All of the fish with the exception of one fell to crankbaits fished in 6 to 8 foot of water. The other fish came on a slow rolled spinner bait. Again all fish were on rocks and windy banks. All in all, not a bad day for cold front conditions and blue bird skies overhead.

Buggs Island 3/05/2011 Fishing Report

Saturday March 5th 2011 brought temperatures upwards of 65 degrees and slightly overcast skies. Randall and I set out to catch some dinner as we were both in the mood to fry some fish! Put in around noon and fished until 4:30. Our efforts were concentrated in Rudds Creek and Eastland Creek. Fishing Shad Raps and Bomber Flat A’s, we wound up catching 6 lmb’s with the largest around 2 lbs….The perfect size for a fish fry….Most of the fish came on rocky points in 5 to 7 foot of water.

Hunt Club Work Day

Turned out the coyote hunting was pretty much a bust due to shorten time period out in the woods due to health circumstances.  We did get to put up some electrical fencing to try and save some apple trees for the deer herd this fall.  Also, tried to catch a fish or two before coming back home.  Next time we will be out at the hunt club we will be hunting down some turkeys.

Coyote Hunting

Picked up an electronic call from Cabelas the other day to test out this weekend.  A few of us are headed out to the hunt club for a work day and we thought we would try it out.  Hopefully video and pictures will ensue.
