5 Great Baits for Fall Bass
Pack this arsenal when you head to the lake this fall, and you’ll be ready to put your share of autumn bass in the boat.
- BOOYAH Blade Spinnerbait, ˝ ounce, snow white, double willow – Shad congregate in creeks during the fall, and where the shad gang up, the bass usually are nearby. They hang on every available piece of cover and feast on the abundant baitfish. A ˝-ounce BOOYAH Blade spinnerbait allows an angler to work quickly from one piece of cover to the next. The snow white head and skirt and twin willowleaf blades suggest a school of baitfish.

Spinnerbaits are very versatile in that they can be fished shallow or deep, fast or slow, winter or summer. Primarily, the BOOYAH Blade will be used in shallow water situations around wood or vegetation. This bait is relatively weedless and can be worked in and around this type of heavy cover. The BOOYAH Blade comes in several blade and color combinations that will match almost any baitfish the bass may be feeding on. A varied retrieve ranging from waking the bait on top with a fast retrieve during the warm water periods to slow rolling the bait on the bottom with a slow retrieve during cold water periods can be effective based on the prevailing conditions. The one constant you can count on is that when fish are aggressive, they will bite a spinnerbait.
- Heddon Super Spook Jr., white chartreuse – Topwater fishing can be terrific during the fall, especially on gray, misty autumn days. A Super Spook, Jr. is just the right size to match a lot of shad, which are half a year old. Watch for surface activity just out from matted grass, over vegetation that doesn’t grow quite to the surface. Also look over points within major creeks in the vicinity of where shad are stacked up. Whether or not you see fish breaking, keep a Super Spook, Jr. tied on and ready and walk it across the top of a point from time to time.
Heddon Super Spook $ 4.39 The Heddon Super Spook series is available in 16 new, highly productive paint schemes and two sizes.
Size A: X9256 Super Spook - 5" 12.25cm - 7/8oz, 24.5g - #4 treble hooks, topwater. Features include an internal rattle, super strong hardware and a very durable body construction.
Size B: X9236 Super Spook, Jr. - 3 1/2" 8.89cm - 1/2oz, 17.0g - #4 treble hooks, topwater. Features include an internal rattle, super strong hardware and a very durable body construction.
- Cotton Cordell Super Spot, ˝ ounce, chrome/black – A Super Spot is an ideal bait for covering a lot of water when the bass are cruising flats or holding over points, humps and ridges. A chrome and black Super Spot suggests a baitfish and draws reaction strikes when it races by with its tight wobble and loud rattles. It can be fished extremely shallow or over several feet of water with equal effectiveness by an angler raising or lower his rod and varying his retrieve speed. A spot also is a great lure to cast past breaking fish that don’t want a surface lure.
Cotton Cordell Dance's Super Spot $ 2.99 The Super Spot is the lipless, vibrating lure that has been producing for years. It can be fished at any depth and has a sound and action that has helped many anglers win major tournaments.
All Spots come standard with realistic 3-D eyes and they delivers that legendary vibrating action. The Cotton Cordell Super Spot is one of the secrets of the pros.
- Bomber Fat Free Fingerling, pearl shad – A Fat Free Fingerling runs 8 to 10 feet deep and is ideal for bass that are holding a little deeper, which often is the case on bright, sunny fall days. Pearl shad once again imitates a shad, with fish-attracting chartreuse highlights. Look for baitfish over humps that rise to less than 10 feet of water and bump the bottom with the lure as often as possible. Hold on tight every time the bait makes contact with the structure.
BD5F Fat Free Shad Fingerling$ 4.99
Cranking depth: Floating 8-10 ft. The 2 inch Fat Free Fingerling is just the right size for most crankbait situations. This lure is winning bass tournaments across the country and has established itself as a multi-species fish catcher. The Fingerling, available in floating and suspending models covers water in the 8 to 10 foot range. Like all Fat Free Shads, the Fingerling features a kick-out paddle, a tight waddle and Excalibur Rotating Treble Hooks. 2 inches, 3/8 oz
- YUM Houdini Shad, 5-inch, glimmer blue pepper – One of the best ways to work a weedless and weightless Houdini Shad during the fall is to cast it around shoreline cover and work it with fairly quick twitches and pauses. Darting just beneath the surface, it will draw strikes from fish that are buried in the cover. Another terrific way to fish a Houdini Shad is to use it as a follow-up bait. When a bass hits and misses, fire a Houdini Shad to the spot where the fish hit and let it fall through the water column. Watch the line and be ready to set the hook.
Yum Houdini Shad $ 2.99 Yum's new 5" Houdini Shad is heads and tails above all other soft plastic jerkbaits because it simply has more tricks than the competition. The Houdini Shad stands out above all others because of its unique tail design which allows the bait to be fished four different ways with very little modification. The tail can be worked as a paddle for a slow fall, an open paddle for a fast fall, or a traditional V-tail which is ideal for highly pressured fish. The Houdini Shad can also be modified to act as a flapper tail and fished just under the surface to create a flitting shad presentation. The Houdini Shad is loaded with LPT and is designed to mimic an injured baitfish. Great for bass fishing. 5", 10 per pack.
